I recently had a conversation with some young folk at a party who told me that they needed to increase their Instagram profiles because they want to be liked and loved. And how I wished I had a mirror of the soul to show them how beautiful they already are, from the inside out. I don’t have a clue about Instagram likes, I just post when I feel I want to share something. I only want followers who are actually interested in my feed, I am not offended if you unlike my profile. I also find it really sad and somewhat desperate when people pay bots to follow, then unfollow you (to increase their followers). To leave the same generic comments without having even really seen a post or begging you like their page.
I remember Instagram before hashtags were a real thing, it was about sharing and caring, not about soliciting attention and adoration.
What strikes me is how all this need for validation is really a sign of how unloved so many people feel. If we felt loveable we wouldn’t need all the likes and external approval from the world. The tragedy is that so many people are too caught up in their own personal insecurities to notice others for their real, true selves anyway, so they can’t give you the approval you need. Only you can do that.
We can only truly love others and be the best friend, partner, parent or human being, by first being loving to ourselves. You know this. You’ve heard it so many times before.
So rather than continue to busy ourselves trying to win the love and attention of others, why not just start with yourself?
A flower doesn’t hesitate, or question itself, it just blossoms the best it knows how. A flower knows it’s special, it doesn’t need to be better than the flower next to it. Neither does it need anyones approval.
In being true to itself a flower is magnificent and fulfils its purpose.
So honour and be true to yourself. The moment you start doing so, you will feel how you are as magnificent as any flower there is. And the world has infinite room flowers. The world is one big garden and it always needs flowers like you.
