In 2013, I almost walked away from YYC SOLEdiers.
It existed under a different name with about 300 members. At the time, I was very much a pushover and a people pleaser. I created a space where I allowed myself to be walked all over on by those who I realize now didn’t have the same values.
It was never JUST about sneakers, reselling, status, or the collection. My vision was to create a community where we can come together simply for the love of sneakers and preserving the culture. Wearing the sneakers are people. Real people who have their own stories and struggles. Dope people I’ve met along the way where I’ve made life long friendships. For me, that’s what it’s about. The community.
Long story short, a situation happened where I had to make a choice to continue or to give up. It was my wife (then girlfriend) who said, “Why are you going to give up on a dream? Just pivot.” So I did just that. I left the very group I helped create and out of it, YYC Solediers was born. Currently, we are running strong at 15,000 members and that number continues to grow everyday. I might have created both groups, but I never did it alone. Shoutout to my team Adam, Andrew, and former partner Andrew J.
Also a huge shoutout to our 24/7 Volunteers
Steve, Aj, Kevin, and Harkirat.
All I did was open up a space where conversations can happen and community can thrive. You can achieve the dream but it’s the people who make it worthwhile.
Last but not least, shout out to my wife for supporting my dreams, no matter how crazy they are and for always encouraging me to pivot but never give up.
