One of my favorite series of pictures that @brandonfienphoto
captured this past season. Not only are the images phenomenal the story that’s behind each image was one of my favorites of the season. Late December, the club had recently flooded and our normally walkable pond was now all deep water retrieves for our 1 year old black lab, Crash. The boys and I were enjoying the perfect waterfowling conditions of a crisp, clear, north wind day. For the entirety of the hunt birds did it perfectly and consistently as we enjoyed singles and doubles of just about every species the pacific flyway has to offer. As we closed in on our 4 man limit, our young pup was also coming to terms with his first experience of fatigue. I was watching him on his platform trying to decide if he’d had enough when I saw his head snap around, ears perked up and his eyes were glued on a pair of wigeon that had hooked up and spun around the blind finishing right in front. The 2 guns that still needed their last birds erupted into the last shots of the day. Both birds down, the hen feet up in the decoys and the drake trying to make his way across the pond. With Crash giving chase the 25 yard retrieve quickly became a 100 with no end in sight as the wigeon was able to keep a solid 40 yards ahead of Crash’s best effort. Then for no reason the bird decided to dive and that proved to be all that Crash needed to close the distance. After a short game of “bobbing for apples” Crash come up with the prize. By this time he was over 200yards out and I was in the boat heading to give our best conservation tool (Crash) a ride back to the blind. The last picture says it all, no matter what, I was going to let him enjoy that retrieve.....he had earned it. #thisiswhy #tanglefreewaterfowl #threefeathers #crashthedog #wigeon #gdoweeklycontest @shaunk91 #blacklab #mydude

So much of our lives are oriented around consumption. Buy this new jacket, we’ve got a new call you have to have, you need the new product “x” in the new Camo pattern “x”. I’ve noticed more in waterfowl hunting than in any facet of my life and I think I’m super tired of it. I have had a stronger reaction to it his off season than anything I’ve ever experienced. I don’t want to buy, I don’t want to go bigger. My grandfather hunted ducks over wooden decoys carved by hand while wearing this waxed canvas jacket that was made by human hands in this country. We still have some of those decoys and I still use this coat (despite my wife’s protests). This isn’t really a coherent thought I guess, other than the unshakeable feeling that we have let greed creep in and take over. I don’t need a new set of waders this season, I don’t need 10 dozen oversized, fully flocked decoys to hunt over, and frankly, I don’t need full straps. I need to spend time sitting in awe of my God’s creation and enjoying the fellowship of my brothers. I need to get back to what matters and I can guarantee it has nothing to do with more stuff.
A road without any power lines is the best kind of road... I can't wait to be driving endless miles chasing birds.
Just for some verification...this is moth yes? It has the right RN number and it is a picture of a moth lol I couldn’t find any UO that had a tag like that so I guess it could be them but my gut says Moth! #helpme #vandiscloset #threefeathers #urbanoutfitters
