TUNBRIDGE WELLS HALF MARATHON COMPLETED & STILL AIN'T HAPPY. Yup, I am kicking myself a bit here and looking back I kinda messed things up despite the result. Despite the course being hilly (especially between 5.5 to 8 miles around Penshurst), I went in with a pacing target which was given to me but I totally misread it and went a lot faster than I should. I didn't even know that I had misread it until just now whilst writing this! I thought the first half of the race I was suppose to be doing 8:20 but instead it should have been 8:50. What made matters worse, I was talking to a Latvian runner before the start and we ran together. Didn't look at the watch, neither of us was talking times etc, having a good chat down the country lanes in the winter sunshine and felt very comfortable with the run. It wasn't until 5.5 miles in that I turned around and noticed we were ahead of the 1h40 pacers! Wtf! Luckily was about to hit the hilly section so slowed it down a lot and got up the hills with ease. After the hills I managed to do pacing of around 8:00-8:20 a mile (which was the target thank god for the last five miles). What a screw up that was and I am totally at fault for messing up this training run despite feeling comfortable, in good shape and I am disappointed with myself. However despite all this, this was the fastest result at 13.1 miles (21km) half marathon distance since March 2016. The time was exactly six minutes faster than I got in Deal, Kent last weekend and I got a course PB which I beat by 13 minutes and 56 seconds. Last years time here in Tunbridge Wells was 01-56-06. Despite a good workout and messing it up, feeling great but I know what I got to do to sort the pacing out otherwise Riga Marathon might not be too pleasurable to me in May. But now for the stats: Time: 01-42-10 Place: 339th out of 1417 runners. PARKRUN 120 COMPLETED - CANON'S PARK, NW LONDON, UK 5km (3.2 miles) tempo run today and first time in five weeks to be let loose and go for it in a parkrun. Had targets, some of them were reached, some didn't but will reflect on them and sort them out in training. There were pro's, there were cons but overall, it was a good workout on this beautiful wintry sunny morning in Stanmore, North London. Three laps around Canon's Park (next to the underground station in Stanmore), all flat, some of it in woodland and to be honest, this was more scenic than I thought it was going to be so I had an enjoyable run out. Didn't sprint off at the start, was able to keep the same sort of pace throughout until 2.5 miles where I slowed down a bit and let myself down at the finish as I just couldnt up the tempo and let some guy overtake me with a few meters to go. (This guy was also shouting at me 200 meters beforehand 'I am coming for ya' and 'Im gaining on ya!') - what a frigging muppet. Training has been great this week and all ready for tomorrow's 16 mile (25.75km) run which includes the 13.1 miles (21km) half marathon at Tunbridge Wells, Kent which is less hilly than last week's race in Deal. Anyway, the stats for today. Time: 21-44. Position: 10th out of 120 runners. Average Pace: 7:13 per mile. Kcal burnt: 444 Parkrun courses completed: 69. PRIDE! PASSION! DEAL HALF MARATHON COMPLETED - NOT MAKING A BIG 'DEAL' OUT OF IT. Well, well, well. I had targets and pacing instructions to take into this half marathon which was treated as a training session and not a race. Came away with mixed emotions and straight afterwards was messaging coach to say I messed up the pacing and felt disappointed but after a few words, I felt a lot better. The course was the hilliest I have ever come across for a half marathon. Tougher than Baldock. Tougher than Watford. Tougher than...well Mt Everest, that's what it felt like today. I think I counted 14 long drag of hills and three nasty steep ones. Also most of the water stations were at the bottom of the hills and within seconds of downing the liquid, it was time to tackle another hill. I managed to get my target pacing right in places on flats (especially after the start) and somehow on most of the hills managed to keep the pace but going downhill, well, I might as well said I was practising my strides because my legs were so bloody far apart! Despite the sunny (but not so cold conditions) and gale force winds of the English Channel when running in the open spaces, I managed to conquer this course without stopping but compared to last week's half marathon in Watford, I was sweating like a pig. A good workout was done and whilst I am taking part in the Tunbridge Wells half marathon next Sunday (which is a training session), that will be a doodle compared to this course! Took in many beautiful country lanes and villages as the course headed south from Deal towards Dover and then return. Feeling tired but pleased. But now for the stats: Time: 01-48-10 Place: 109th out of 352 runners. Average Pace: 8:15 Kcal burnt: 2000 Fastest half marathon time since 26th March 2016 and knock off 9 minutes and 5 seconds of my time from last Sunday. Back to training and massaging this week. Had to stop off for a ham sandwich because im a fat git! 😅😅😅 GOOD morning from a sunny East Kent. Conditions looking good here in Deal. Lets get the job done! Its half marathon time! #running #dealhalf #stevenage #stevenagestriders #fitness #workout
97 days until the 'home' marathon in Riga, Latvia and the next training session takes me to the Kent coast to the coastal town of Deal (north of Dover). Happy memories of the last time I raced here back in April 2015 for the St Georges Day marathon where I managed to grab a 5th place finish (after leading the race for 20 miles) and finished in 3-26-48 (had a disaster of the last six miles, losing out on 4th place in the last 300 meters but was still beaming afterwards as I only got a marathon PB in Paris the previous week and then destroyed that in Riga a couple of weeks after this marathon). Anyway.... Yes, tomorrow is another race. Tomorrow is a half marathon. Tomorrow is a 21km distance (13.1 miles), and tomorrow (like last Sunday).... I wont be racing in the race. Not going to make a big 'deal' out of this (get it!). This is part of the training for Riga and I am gradually building up my fitness, starting to get faster and glimpses of the old me racing before I got injured are coming to fruition. I got my pacing instructions, I got my targets and after this morning's gentle stroll at Harrow Parkun, I managed to get through it without a problem (as I had a niggle on my right thigh in midweek). All set, ready for the journey down the A2 and hopefully I can achieve the targets set. Above all, looking forward to a good meal afterwards by the English Channel (Le manche!). Time to get the job done! #running #fitness #training #workout #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining #fitnessmotivation #workoutmotivation #kineorun #LattelecomRigaMarathon #dealhalfmarathon #dealhalf
PARKRUN 119 COMPLETED - HARROW, NW LONDON, UK Easy run out and gentle stroll in the park as I headed down the A41 to Harrow (from Watford). Plan was to enjoy it, take it easy, and have a chat with the locals (whilst ticking of another course). Three laps on paths (with a mini loop on lap one), mostly flat, with a slight uphill for 300 meters (not too steep either), so this for me is a fast course. It was very tempting to get carried away and race it but I managed to hold the pace. For most of the 5km run, I was speaking to a young Indian chap who was doing the same as me, take a stroll and get ready for a race tomorrow. A few months ago if I was doing a 5km (or any run at any distance), I would be struggling to talk, out of breath etc, today it was different and was able to hold down a conversation whilst running. Also felt very strange to pace alongside with somebody during a Parkrun but we had a great time and before we knew it, event over. Also the marshalls and event organisers are fantastic, welcoming and all of them have a good sense of humour. There is a very good community feel to this course which I don't see often at Parkrun's in London. Hope to be back here one day. Came away from a good runout feeling very positive and feeling good. No sweat. Didn't push hard. Took it steady and now feel ready for tomorrow's half maraton in Deal, Kent. Anyway, the stats. Time: 24-00. Position: 39th out of 182 runners. I will not let the weather get me down! No ice on all the paths and cycle ways around Stevenage is going to stop me doing my interval run in freezing temperatures this morning! OK, the only way round it was to do the main session (after the warm up and before the cool down) in Fairlands Valley Showground on the FROZEN grass! So 20 x 60 seconds at 8:00 minute per mile pacing with 60 seconds recovery in between! Even though it was tougher off-road, I completed the session. It was the only time today I could do a training run and bugger the act of god...I did it! Pride! Passion! Ambition! P.S - its 100 days until Riga Marathon! And training is on track! WATFORD HALF MARATHON COMPLETED on 4th February 2018. Great run out and baging more miles in the bag. Wasnt racing the even but needed to get 13.1 miles (21km) done today at 9:30 a mile pacing so doing this course was very ideal, with closed roads, water stations and several tough hills. And there was a medal plus t-shirt awaiting for me at the finish line. Not bad for a Sunday morning training run. I ran alongside the 2h pacer guys until mile 12 when there was quite a lot of downhill than uphill after that and seemed to ran a bit faster. Have to admit, until mile 12 it felt like I didnt break a sweat and felt very comfortable. Very pleased with the workout and no niggles to report. WATFORD HALF MARATHON COMPLETED Great run out this morning and baging more miles in the bag. Wasnt racing the event today but needed to get 13.1 miles (21km) done today at 9:30 a mile pacing so doing this course was very ideal, with closed roads, water stations and several tough hills. And there was a medal plus t-shirt awaiting for me at the finish line. Not bad for a Sunday morning training run. I ran alongside the 2h pacer guys until mile 12 when there was quite a lot of downhill than uphill after that and seemed to ran a bit faster. PARKRUN 118 COMPLETED - RUSHMERE, BEDFORDSHIRE, UK Longer training session than planned as the serious part of prepartions for Riga marathon has commenced. Today it was a 45 minute drive to Rushmere Country Park which is located between Leighton Buzzard, Bletchley and Woburn. I got the training session slightly wrong as I choose an off road course and not road. But what I did needed was hills on the course or somewhere nearby to do a bit of hill training after the 5km parkrun. So I got 50% of the planning right. Doh! But still, doing the training session all off road might come in good stead later on as afterwards I was feeling fantastic, glad I put in a good performance and a lot of effort. All the water on my chest wasn't from the rain either! The two lap hilly off-road course around Rushmere is one of the scenic woodland courses I have done in a long time. Good workout but not sure if I liked that huge descent on each lap. Felt like it was lasting forever as I kept running down, and down, and down.....you get the story. Anyway, Parkrun was up first. Stats. Time: 23-14. Position: 16th out of 133 runners. Average Pace: 7:37 per mile (1.6km - and the target was to do an average of 7.45). Kcal burnt: 448 Parkrun courses completed: 67. Afterwards its was hill sprints with walk down recovery followed by another lap of the Parkrun course. This was also to be done at a tempo speed and the target was 7:00 per mile pacing. Kinda failed at that as I averaged 8:23 but did try to push it despite all the rain and mud. No excuses. In the end the tempo lap was 1.53 miles done in 12-47 burning 232 kcal. Good fast hilly off-road workout completed, now its the turn of a 13.1 mile (21km) training run at the Watford Half Marathon tomorrow. Only pacing it, no racing! PRIDE! PASSION! Tuesday 30th January: 6 mileveasy run. Got pacing wrong and landed up doing 8:34 a mile instead of 9:30. Hate shopping but today loved it. All set for marathon season. Love shopping at @asicsrunning main store at London's Oxford Street. Tested my legs on the old treadmill with the latest technology. Sunday 28th January: had to cut my training session short this morning as I slept in. Was suppose to do 8 miles but only managed 6.43 miles. Just made the first train of the day from Rickmansworth to Marylebone (London) for my 12 hour shift at the 'real job'. Ran from home in Watford and along the A412 to Rickmansworth. Couldnt go through my usual route of the scenic Cassiobury Park and along the canal due to the darkness at stupid o'clock. Miles: 6.43. Time: 1-04-17. Average pace: 10:00 a mile. PARKRUN 117 COMPLETED - BEDFONT LAKES, SURREY, UK Second run after returning from a minor ankle injury this week and made it through another 5km. A bit of mix and match today as I for the 1st half of the 5km I did at 5km pace (wanted to test myself out) but second half I slowed it right down and took it easy (apart from the last 300 meters I decided to fight it out for 30th place but missed out by a milli second). The two lap course was around the beautiful Bedfont Lakes (and the railway line which isn't so beautiful) next to Heathrow airport (good job as I needed to be there less than thirty minutes after crossing the finishing line). The course was all gravel, mostly flat but in places the puddles were huge and got a complete soaking. Well organised Parkrun and a very good workout completed. Can't wait for tomorrow's 8 mile steady run. Stats. Time: 22-45. Position: 31st out of 235 runners. Monday 22nd January: 5 mile (8km) recovery run done today in 46-12, averaging 9:15 a mile. Burnt 785kcal. Struggled after 30 minutes as I am a bit sore from yesterday's race on the ankle and calfs. Resting up now but all will be ok. Photo: from yesterday's start at Essendon 10km. Lots of kids who decided it would be fun to be right at the front with all the elite runners (and average paced runners like me lol) as they do the family 5km run and most of us were doing the 10km race. Managed to get in front of them as there were a few tight corners after the start which I noticed during my warm up beforehand. #running #fitness #training #workout #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining
Top 20 finish but still a lot of work to do. Finished the 10km (6.26 miles) race around Essendon golf course in Hertfordshire in 49-38, coming in 16th out of 128 runners. Despite the snowy conditions and freezing temperatures, I thought I had a good workout but looking at the stats, I went off too quickly again (and to be honest, I thought I didnt go off to quickly at the time). Slowed down a bit around mile 3 and mile 6 because of the long drag of a hill and had to slog it out (by mile 6 I couldnt even see a thing as the snow was crazy at this point). Averaged 7:56 a mile and burnt 939kcal. Managed to fo a good warm up and a cool down afterwards. I tried to push myself harder but looks like Im still a long way off from my best 10km times from 2015. Now back to the drawing board and see what happens in training this week. Still got a lot of hard work to do before the Riga marathon which is in four months time. #running #fitness #training #workout #parkrunUK #parkrun #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining
Essendon 10km Preview - Sunday 21st January. Looking forward to the first race of the year and doing 10km (slightly over 6 miles) around the grounds of Essendon Golf Course between Hatfield and Hertford tomorrow. I thought it was off road but its on tarmac. Oh well. Still, its a race and its part of the preparation for the Riga Marathon in May. Feeling 100%, was very happy to give the legs a small runout at this mornings parkrun near St Albans (despite getting coated in mud) and I am totally focused right now. Can't wait to get up at stupid o'clock, get there, do the warm up, do the race and then do the cool down. I havent been this focused for a race in a very long time. I feel fitter than ever. I am more positive than I was this time last year. I run for a great team with great support, fantastic backroom support, my family, friends, work mates....without you guys, I still be on the booze and getting nowhere. Now let's see what this 'fat git' can do at 08.30 tomorrow! Hopefully I be finishing with a big smile for the right reasons. Thursday 18th January - tempo run day! Caught a train to Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire from London Marylebone and warmed up around the beautiful surroundings of the Aquadome in Ricky before hitting the path along the Grand Union Canal, then crossing Cassiobury Park in Watford. The aim was to do 5 miles (8km) in 42-30 with average pacing around 8:15-8:00 per mile. Well I totally got it wrong and averaged 8.02 per mile. So a little bit quicker than I should have done so a bit disappointed about that. However after the second mile I was feeling really comfortable and should have done a few extra miles afterwards but had to stop. All part of the plan. That was day 9 of 9 of running and in some ways, happy to have a day off tomorrow and recover a bit. Loving the training plan, feeling fitter than ever (well, since early 2016) and more focused than ever. Did a mile (1.6km) warm up and cool down as well, so totaling 7 miles (11.26km). Stats during tempo run, running 5 miles (8km) in 40-10, av.pace 8.02 and burning 746 kcal. Splits: mile 1: 7-57, mile 2: 8.18, mile 3: 8.00, mile 4: 7.46, mile 5: 8.03. Saw a rainbow during the cool down. It was pretty. Then got caught in a hailstone storm! #running #fitness #training #workout #parkrunUK #parkrun #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining

Tuesday 16th January - today session was a tempo run. 8 x 800 meters (which is roughly about half a mile) at my 5km pace with 90 seconds recovery. Had a mile warm up and a mile cool down as well. Caught a train to Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire from London Marylebone and warmed up around the beautiful surroundings of the Aquadome in Ricky before hitting the path along the Grand Union Canal, then crossing Cassiobury Park in Watford. Managed to do this session in 1-01-11, running 7 miles (11.26km) and burning 1,062 kcal. The session was great (and nice to see some winter sun) but I think I was a bit slower than my current 5km pace. Still, workout done. No niggles and full of positivity right now. #running #fitness #training #workout #parkrunUK #parkrun #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining
Monday 15th January - 40 minute recovery run today. 4.44 miles (7.14km) at 9.11 per mile pacing. Burnt 691 kcal. On the plus side, just weighed myself and I am now under 13 stone for the first time in 16 months. Now weigh 12.97 stone (82.4kg/181.7lbs) so the weight loss is going well along with the fitness programme. #running #fitness #training #workout #parkrunUK #parkrun #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining

Sunday 14th January - was suppose to do a 12 mile (19.31 km) steady run but as I was enjoying this part of the Grand Union Canal so much through Watford and Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire, UK, I decided to up the mileage to a half marathon distance (13.1 miles - 21km). Averaging nine minutes a mile pacing, I got the miles in the bag in 01-55-11 (which was faster than my half marathon times in November just gone and I wasnt racing today!). Burnt 2016kcal. Feeling fantastic, no niggles to report and the training/fitness plan is now falling into place. #running #fitness #training #workout #parkrunUK #parkrun #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining

PARKRUN 115 COMPLETED - GUNNERSBURY PARK, LONDON, UK I was believing that I could go under sub-22 minutes for the first time since 13th July 2016! The motivation was there. Training has been near excellent this week. The mentality was there. My plan was to go Gung-Ho this morning and thrash my body to try and get a fast time. I found it hard don't get me wrong, I still got quite a of weight to shift and lots of body strength workouts to do that but I went to Gunnersbury Park in West London with the aim of just going for it. And I did. (The course is a flat two lap course, the only worry was the amount of potholes) First mile - 6:40 - good fast pace, didn't shoot off from the start and kept it steady. Second mile 7:13 - slowed down a touched for about thirty seconds but managed to get a grip off myself and pushed towards the end of the mile. Third mile 7:06 - continuing on from the second mile, just kept pushing but getting faster towards the end. Last 400 meters - gung-ho!!!! Sprinted like hell, faster than I did at Tring Parkrun two weeks ago and overtook so many other runners! Contender for best sprint ever by me! I finished the course in 21-47, finishing 57th out of 548 runners. Fastest parkrun time since Crissy Fields in San Francisco in December 2017 (22-13) and my next targets in the next couple of weeks (regarding 5km) are - a) my last fast parkrun time was 21-15 on Christmas Day 2015 at Panshanger! Going to be tough but I believe I can do it. When I was marathon training at my peak I was getting times of around 20-00 in 5km's which help me get a marathon PB of 03-16-22 that year. Just got to keep building and working hard in training. b) however, my last fastest official 5km time (not parkrun) was back on 13th July 2016, the Stevenage Striders Handicap and I did that in 21-38. I hope to beat that very soon as well and is probably my next target in the 5km times. Just some aims to go for, lets see what I can do! Now to look forward to tomorrow's morning long run. #running #fitness #training #workout #parkrunUK #parkrun #stevenage #stevenagestriders #teamdanik #PridePassionAmbition #RoadtoValencia #runningbuddies #marathontraining
Friday 12th January: today was 6 mile (10km) tempo run session. My body didnt get out of first gear until I hit mile 4 and then I was flying. Hated the weather today, cold and dreary. Tried a new route today, an out and back course from Watford to Patchetts Green with a few hills chucked in. Had trouble crossing the A41 twice which slowed me down quite a bit. In the end finished the 6 miles in 51-47, burning 922kcal. #running #RunningBuddies #marathons #marathonrunner #marathonrunning #fitness #Workout #workoutmotivation #training #stevenagestriders #instarun #fit #instarunner #instarunning #roadtovalencia
