French drinks giant Marie Brizard will be glad to see the back of 2018. Full-year results released this week show sales down by 6.3%, with only strong sales in Poland and growth in Spain for comfort.
French drinks group Marie Brizard Wine & Spirits (MBWS) has had a sorry time of late, as regular readers of The Nightcap will know. After a 25% profits slump and ongoing troubles in its home market, we’re sure the company won’t be sad to see the back on 2018. A sentiment surely underlined by its full-year results, released this week, which showed that sales fell 6.3% over the course of the year to €389 million (about £342 million). But while the French market continued to slow, there was at last some good news in the fourth quarter: sales climbed 17.1% in Poland, signalling a “progressive recovery”, and there was “solid sales growth” in Spain. Let’s hope the tide has now turned for the Sobieski, William Peel and Gautier Cognac-maker.

Raise a dram to the weekend, with the newly launched core range (12YO, Huddart, 15YO, 18YO) from Old Pulteney. Distillery manager Malcolm Waring wanted to capture the unique microflora from warehouse no. 6 where the 18 Year Old is matured, giving it extra earthy, toffee notes. While we’ll miss the previous 17YO and 21YO core expressions, the quality of the current range is irresistible. Slaintè!
Last night I finished working on a feeling that I’ve been working on for over a year now. It’s taken time, but I got there in the end. Here it is.....wait for it....... I don’t like Linkwood. There, I’ve said it. Deep breath. This feeling surprises me because it has a very loyal following and from what I’ve seen from the Cadenheads releases, it ‘flies off the shelves’. I rarely ‘don’t like’ a distillery. But I’ve tried 3 Linkwoods now from Cadenheads, obviously of varying ages, and I’ve struggled with all of them. Let’s be honest, Cadenheads are masters of their craft, so I know it’s not the fault of the cask choice or the timing in bottling, it’s simply the character of the distillery right? 🤔 this one, I opened a while ago, didn’t enjoy, so left it on the shelf. Revisiting It last night left me with the same tasking notes. Overwhelming citrus and sherbet that were not even levelled out with a bucket of water. I’m not upset. It means I can rule it out as a distillery to look out for, and to be honest, my wallet and sanity will thank me for that, considering I lust after nearly every Cadenheads release. The Balmenach is also one I didn’t enjoy, however it has been my only Balmenach tasted. Again left for a second sitting after a good few months, but same lack of enjoyment ensued. I tried. At least I tried. Hey ho. Onwards and upwards. Now where’s that fabulous Signatory Tormore that’ll put everything right again..........
This week has been all whiskies (not complaining) but my WINE exam is tomorrow and I’ve drunk only 40% abv and above instead of practising for my blind tasting 🙊
Sorry, digressed. I couldn’t miss the chance today to meet Malcolm Waring from @oldpulteneymalt
after missing him during my visit to the distillery in Wick in 2014. He’s launching the new core range of 12, Huddart, 15 and 18YO, replacing the previous 12, 17 and 21YO.
Say hello to Huddart, which receives additional time in 2nd fill peated cask, and the smooth, toffee and earthy 18YO. As Malcolm says, he wanted to capture the microflora of warehouse 6, where the kiln used to be, so the casks are rested there. It’s an incredible 18YO which I think deserves to be a classic on everyone’s mantel. Find these at @maison_du_whisky_singapore
