How to interview someone? I’ve done it a hundred times, but it’s not something I was ever taught and it’s definitely not something that I thought I’d ever do in my life. I wanted to be a cowboy when I grew up and interviewing potential employees is not in the job description. But there I was Monday going over their job application, giving a shop tour, discussing the benefits of working here, paying attention to their reactions and listening to what they had to say. I once read a study by Google which concluded that three interviews is the perfect number. Less than that doesn’t allow enough opportunity to get to know the potential hire, and more than that has diminishing returns and doesn’t contribute anything to predicting success of outcome. I figure Google has it right, so we do three. It’s a difficult thing trying to decide if someone will work out. I’ve definitely gotten it wrong before, but most often I get it right. I don’t care which school was attended or what the GPA number is. I want someone who is positive, can problem solve, takes responsibility seriously, will support and work with a team and also happens to think that t-shirts are rad - and in that rank order. We’ve got a great team here. One that I’m proud to work with everyday. Excited to add to it. Their second interview is Friday.
Got here early this morning. It’s so quiet right now. It will be so busy in a few minutes. I love both.
