Because he’d lost the sight in one eye
and knew now he could never have
another drink in his entire life
he went to the Canadian Tire
and bought a rope.
The crumpled receipt was laying
on his kitchen table
when he was finally found,
alongside his car keys and a sugar bowl
and an empty pack of cigarettes.
No note, no message to assuage, explain,
Or maybe it was neither of those things.
He had functioned perfectly well
with just one eye
and he’d gone without drinking before.
Maybe it was this:
the stark realization that growing old for him would mean giving up one by one
the things he had come to love,
gotten out of bed for,
stayed up late to delight in.
A house of dominoes
he preferred to not watch
come toppling down. -
