Unlike theatre, cinema is all about visuals. The more you avoid verbal methods to communicate, the better is the impact in idealist terms. Anyhow, writer-director Renjith devices different plans for his film #Nandanam
's lead protagonist #Balamani
, who easily is amongst Malayalam cinema's most remembered female characters of all times.
Now, now... Balamani is an ardent devotee of #Guruvayoorappan
(Lord Krishna deity in Guruvayoor temple). The newly appointed maid in a family of aristocrats, she dusts out a framed picture of her favourite God that lay somewhere in the attic. Not one to overtly worship the God, Balamani ensues in everyday conversations with Him. The film opens with a crackling chide she makes to her God, "Whatever I say, you give a stealthy smile and glance!" We smile and begin to root incessantly for this girl with a heart of gold!
As Balamani's animated tête-à-têtes continue, actor @navyanair143
single-handedly designs the tapestry of the entire film. As the film takes more rich, emotional shades, Navya lends empathy and vulnerability to her character which - on papers - might be just another tragedy queen.
Balamani's losses and sacrifices are plaintive in way that is soppy without an iota of doubt. However, it is Navya who develops the right inkling to balance the character's sensitivity and level-headedness - making it a notch above the film in entirety.
Indeed, Balamani is special to many a Malayalam film lover and there's no better day to remember her than the fabulous Navya's birthday.
