So this is a little spot I like to call ‘Badass of the week’. May I present Rachel Morrison aka @rmorrison
, who shot such films as Netflix’s ‘Mudbound’ and that tiny indy effort ‘Black Panther’, and is the first woman to ever receive an Oscar nomination for cinematography. #totalinspiration

🌿Mudbound won Hillary Jordan the Bellwether Prize in 2006 for highlighting issues of social injustice. This beautifully written and haunting story is told through the perspective of several characters, who are well drawn, each with their own distinct voice. Jordan conveys a harsh, bleak landscape in a remote part of the Mississippi Delta. In 1946, Henry has moved his refined wife to the remote farm, which becomes isolated by relentless mud when it rains. Their lives become entangled with those of black sharecroppers, whose brave son returns from service in the war. Having been subjected to segregation, contempt and poor conditions in the army, Ronsel faces deep-rooted hypocrisy from the local townspeople:
“They gave us the dregs of everything, including officers. Our lieutenants were mostly Southerners wigs washed out in some other post. Drunkards, yellow bellies, bigoted no-count crackers who couldn’t have led their way out of a one-room shack in broad daylight. Putting them over black troops was the Army’s way of punishing them. They had nothing but contempt for us and made sure we knew it.....Our uniforms didn’t mean a damn to the local white citizens. Not that I expected them to, but my buddies from up and out west were thunderstruck by the way we were treated. Reading about Jim Crow in the paper is a mighty different thing from having a civilian bus driver wave a pistol in your face and tell you to get your coon hide off the bus to make room for a fat white farmer...The Army didn’t do nothing to protect us from the locals.”
This is an uncomfortable and harrowing tale, but very powerful to the end in its message.🌿

Tamar-kali will hold a Workshop Discussion on the SoundTrack_Cologne Theme Day "Composing for Film" on August 24th. The Singer-songwriter made her debut as a film score composer in 2017 with the score to the Oscar-nominated Mudbound, which premiered to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. Her score led her to be selected by The Hollywood Reporter to appear in the Composer Roundtable and IndieWire listed the composition as one of the Top 25 Film Scores of the 21st Century. She recently composed the score for Joshua Marston’s Sundance film, Come Sunday, released by Netflix and her next work can be heard in Veena Sud’s upcoming Between Earth and Sky.

Rachel Morrison’s name may not be familiar to you yet, but she recently made cinematic history. This introverted woman’s work as DOP on Mudbound earned her a nomination for best Cinematography, making her the first woman to ever be nominated in this male dominated category. Reflecting on the significance of her nomination, Morrison realized how inspirational this visibility has been to so many women, and that hopefully this will be the light at the end of the tunnel to encourage women to keep shooting. And it only took 90 years to happen!
Next up for Morison is "Against all Enemies" with Kristen Stewart after wrapping up Black Panther.

Mudbound by Hillary Jordan // 📘📘📘📘📘 // When faced with the choice, “Book or movie?”, always choose “Book!” I’d been eyeing Mudbound on Netflix for a while but when I saw it was a book first, I eagerly grabbed it. This is a stunning work that crescendos to a heartbreaking conclusion. It’s the story of Henry and Laura McAllan and the Mississippi Delta farm where they and the black sharecroppers try to eke out a living. Both Jamie McAllan, Henry’s brother, and Ronsel Jackson, son of the sharecroppers, have returned from fighting in WWII. Both are deeply scarred heroes and hoping the make a new life upon their return home. Not much has changed though and the racism that defined the region still reigns. The unlikely friendship between Jamie and Ronsel sets a tragedy in motion. Pappy McAllan and Florence and Hap Jackson round out the story, each chapter told from a different perspective. // I’ve read a lot of Southern literature over the years and this is a worthy addition to the canon. The tale is both sweeping in scale and built out of tiny, heart wrenching moments. I loved the characters. Such a solid, satisfying read. 📘📘📘📘📘5/5 books #mudbound #hillaryjordan #bookormovie #contemporaryfiction #southernlit #mississippi #racism #bestof2018 #2018reads #bookreview #alana_loves_books #alanalovestoread #booknerds #bookstagram

🤩🌞Good morning from West Cork! Yesterday we had a lovely day, just taking in our surroundings at our holiday villa, and resting from the long drive. Today, we’re going exploring!
One of the first things I did on entering our villa was to check out the books and brochures in the bookcase. Surprisingly, there weren't a lot. I did find these, which were all under my radar previously (my ratings):
📚 The Girl on the Train 🌟3
📚Mudbound 🌟5 (I picked this for my book club’s inaugural night)
📚The 100 Year Old Man (I didn’t finish...I was heavily pregnant !!)
📚Strange Fits of Passion 🌟3 (I can’t remember if I read this, but I went through a stage of reading a lot of Anita Shreve 15 years ago. They’re a good, easy read and I love coastal New England, where her books are set).
Do you like having a nosey at the books in your holiday home? 📚📚

So I finished White Teeth (new favourite) last night and thought about my reading so far this month and so far I’ve read 5 books. I’ve had a 2 and 3 star and then all easy 5 stars!
So I started thinking what is a 5 star book to me and what makes me tick! And well... I dunno. I know things I enjoy in books such as a look at relationships, books that span a few decades. I also like narration from different characters. There is some common ground in these three books. Brontë looks at an unhappy marriage, Mudbound has complex relationships in it and White Teeth has two couples with... interesting marriages let’s say! There is also different perspectives in each of these books. Besides that? Nothing.
So whilst they have some things in common that doesn’t mean all my 5 star reads do those things. Essentially a 5 star to me is about the emotions they create and how I feel when I close the book. In each of these examples I could have read hundreds of pages more just so I can stay with the characters that little bit longer. Whether I hate or love a character I need to feel something for them. You can have a great plot but if there is 2D characters in it I feel disconnected.
Of course I like lots more things in books than the above mentioned list. Eg I love books that look at towns (hi King 👋🏻). I like dark, atmospheric writing (yo Daphne!). I like clever twisty plots (howdy Christie). I like a successfully written romance that’s not cheesy but instead beautiful (looking at you Waters). Naturally I don’t expect all these things in one book (but that would be the holy grail of books for me) but sometimes you read a book that doesn’t tick any of your normal boxes but it GETS you, right in the heart.
So what am I saying? A load of nonsense really. I’d be a shit author quite frankly. But I think I’m trying to say that whilst I have things I enjoy: sometimes a book can take you by surprise and that’s exciting and wonderful for a reader. And I guess these are things that makes me tick, just books that find a way to make space for itself in your heart. And you can never tell what those books are going to be, and I love that.
THE END (see this is why I’d be a crap author)

📖 Can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks!
Here’s my quick thoughts.....
The story takes place at the end of WWII in Mississippi, during the time of share cropping and the whisper of civil rights. It's a story of friendship between two returning war heroes that transcends race. It is also a character-driven story of woman who was set up to be the weakest character, but in the end was one of the strongest. It's a meaningful, heart-wrenching and haunting novel that will stay with you. #mudbound #hillaryjordan #bookclub #booksworthtalkingabout

نيتفليكس تجمع Ben Affleck و Anne Hathaway!
The Last Thing He Wanted
The Last Thing He Wanted

“I never saw ‘Drive’ finished. I never got to do any press for it,” she said.
Mulligan, who is in the South of France to promote her new film, “Wildlife,” was working on a different project at the time of “Drive’s” release. She did, however, make an effort to see it. “I tried on an airplane, but then someone walked past and saw me watching myself,” she said with a laugh.
