February, 2014 - 5 years ago, the first day I put my shovel into the ground in the US after 13 years of gardening break. It was a few months after I graduated from my masters program. Murat was 3, and Bahar was only 7 months old in the stroller behind. We have come a long way in terms of gardening since the day in this picture. Hi, my name is Hurma. I am originally from Turkmenistan, mom of two, and wife of the most supportive man on earth. I grew up in Turkmenistan in a food grower family. My parents still grow most of their foods in Turkmenistan - you can check my earlier lemon post. I started gardening on my own 5 years ago - a year before I joined Instagram. My first garden space was the small plot you can see behind me. The day we took this shot, we tilled half of the bed behind and planted some potatoes. My first year crops were some potatoes, a couple of tomato, eggplant, and a few pepper plants. It was a trial garden, and my future gardening was going to depend on that year’s results. My peppers were not brilliant, but I could get enough tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplants to cook. Small success of gardening fueled my already burning gardening passion. The next year, I tried my plants from seeds. Seed starting was more challenging than I expected: I killed a round of tomatoes and three rounds of pepper seedlings and learned how not to kill the seedlings. The next four years, I expanded my garden and gained valuable experiences in seed starting, container and ground gardening. I have learned how to grow most of the herbs, greens, and vegetables along with repurposing and composting the sources. After five years, I am more confident about gardening, but I don’t consider myself a professional gardener - I still have a long way to go. I have failed many times, and I have come to breaking points many times. But with the one bite homegrown tomato, I always was grateful and proud of myself for keep going instead of giving up. I often get questions from beginner gardeners about where to start. This is my own example which shows exactly where I started. Start small; don’t be afraid of failing. Garden failures teach gardeners more than the successes do.

Here is a great upper body workout demonstrated by my client Allen White. He’s been training with me for a few years. His goal is to increase his strength and speed, and that’s what we’ve done. Allen is an avid runner competing in 5 & 10k’s and marathons. He usually wins or finishes in the top of his age group. Looking at him and watching him workout you would never believe he’s 70 years old!!
He is proof it’s never too late to start working out!!

1. Track your activity. Shoot to take at least 10,000 steps per day. StepBet is a good tool for motivation because you win money for meeting your step goals!

2. Embrace the weight room. Carrie Underwood’s trainer recently posted a funny meme that said: “Not lifting weights because you are afraid of looking like a body builder is like not driving your car because you fear becoming a NASCAR driver.”

3. Cheat in moderation. Your ultimate goal should be to live the healthiest life you actually enjoy living. Scheduling time when you can eat whatever you want is a good psychological break from your weight-loss journey. Just remember to cheat in moderation so that it doesn’t derail your entire plan.

First picture is a 1 egg + 2 egg white scramble with sautéed veggies, avocado, and fruit! If you cook the veggies and eggs on the same pan, this takes only 10 minutes with very little clean up!!! -
