Happy Friday! Be well this weekend friends, but don’t stop working!
Smell: (Search the above with “SL Blog” to find the article.) Though I haven’t read her book, Dr. Robin DiAngelo has published many articles online about white fragility (this one f/t @rachel.cargle
) that are very helpful when reflecting on our role in racial oppression. If we aren’t digging deeply, we aren’t really safe for BIPOC. And when we dig deep, we’re going to experience symptoms of white fragility. Know it, name it. “Call a thing a thing” as @catriceology
See: I recently sought out insight on cultural appropriation and loved @sirsargent
’s interview on @reparationspodcast.
His strategy of elevating black artists makes a powerful case for how our passions can be potent strategies for social change.
Taste: For the next few weeks, let’s step into the shoes of BIPOC and audit the representation we see around us. First up: movies and tv. For the next week, review the cast and crews of the movies/tv shows you watch. How many BIPOC are present? Is it representational? Acknowledging inherent limitations (google “Decoded-Are Hispanic People White”), let’s use 2017 census estimates: non-Hispanic/Latinx white folks are ~60% of the population. Are BIPOC representing 40% of the cast/crews of the movies/tv we watch? Literally do the math and write it down.
Touch: I just finished @ijeomaoluo
‘s fan-fucking-tastic book ‘So You Want to Talk About Race.’ In the chapter on “checking privilege,” Oluo asks us to write down a list of our privileges and consider how they’ve influenced our status and understanding of the world. I literally did this (it’s on my IG Bookshelf highlight). I learned new, gross things about myself. You certainly will too.
Hear: Around ~30 minutes in, @luvvie
discuss the importance of preemptively doing the work around equity, justice, and inclusion because there will come a time in our lives when we need to access it. BIPOC have been waiting for white folks for too damn long. They are losing their lives waiting for us to “unlearn” bullshit. We must be poised and ready and that means doing the work NOW.
