Before we move on, there is one last piece in the Mingei story. We mentioned earlier of Yanagi Sōetsui (1889 - 1961) one of the co-founders Mingei. He was a philosopher rather than a craftsman and he coined the term ’Mingei’ — an amalgam of ‘arts/crafts’ with ‘of the people’. His thoughts on craft and also aesthetics are captured in his ’The Unknown Craftsman’, later adapted into English by Bernard Leach. It’s a detailed insight into the essence of Japanese beauty and the role of craftsmanship. Coincidentally, Yanagi’s son, Sōri Yanagi (1915-2011) became one of the most prolific and influential industrial designers in post-war Japan. His works including the Butterfly Stool and his Stainless Steel Kitchenware are pivotal pieces that helped define contemporary Japanese design.
Heidi House, completed in September 2005, is an extremely low-cost studio and office space. Located in an up-central residential area of Tokyo, the house is set back from the adjoining site boundaries by 3 meters, so no fireproofing of the external wall was necessary. . . #kleindythamarchitecture #kleindytham #kdatoday #japanesearchitecture #japaneseinterior #architecturephotography 📷 Ryota Atarashi

The room the space for me When night comes, all I want is a relaxing home after the day is done, to breathe and slow down. While we peer into another tatami room in Hamada’s home, there is a third figure we haven't mentioned yet. Before settling in Mashiko, Hamada met a British potter by the name of Bernard Leach (1887 - 1979). This meeting set about a lifelong friendship that brought the pottery cultures of the UK and Japan forever closer together. Leach is considered by many the ‘father of British studio pottery’ and helped introduce and popularise Japanese pottery to the West. After seeing his work in Tokyo, Hamada accompanied Leach back to England, where he spent the next three years in the small town of St. Ives. There, along with other artists, they helped create an ‘artist colony’ in Cornwall. This friendship soon became a bridge between cultures, allowing an exchange of their ideals and a better understanding of each other's aesthetics.

Artek x Klein Dytham x Dover Street Market. To celebrate 80 years of Artek Stool 60 designed by Alvar Alto we ‘extended’ an a new series of stools and for an installation in Dover Street Market’s ‘elephant’ gallery in Ginza. KDa’s installation was inspired by the iconic Artek stool with it's elegant legs, which appear almost like blades of grass, very much in contrast with the mass of the elephant. By extending the legs of the stool the blades of grass ‘grew’ longer - as if the elephant was standing in the swaying Savannah grass. KDa designed stools in 5 new heights the tallest being 2140mm high. The new heights developed for the installation could be used as a bar stool, a bar table, a projector stand and the tallest one could be a ‘kami dana’ - the gods shelf to in a traditional Japanese home or office, positioned to the north just below the ceiling. . . #kleindythamarchitecture #kleindytham #kdatoday #japanesearchitecture #japaneseinterior #architecturephotography #artek #commedesgarcons #doverstreetmarket #stool60
