Because the hoof wall has a verticaly linear structure (long strands of hoof cells called tubules) a weaker foot like this one can be prone to cracks between the joins of these structures.
Normally it's a good thing for the hoof capsule to expand and contract however treatment for these cracks mostly has to do with stabilising the hoof so the cracks can grow out.
The roll over (not to be confused with a roll back) is a fantastic tool... we teach it early on in a young horses development and it becomes a great indicator of a horses stage of development. Once a horse comes out of a roll over with the same momentum and cadence at a walk, they are ready to learn it at a trot... I roll a horse over every time they get worried, hollow their top line or leave their legs behind them.. notice how this youngster. . Although still very sticky through the roll over comes out stepping deep and carry his head level rather than up in the air with a hollow back. It's still early in his development in this video, but he is already starting to make an effort to carry himself properly on a loose rein #heartfelthorsemanship #naturalhorsemanship #horsesofinstagram #horsetraining #bitless #appaloosa
Red light, green light? What does the horse tell us?
Learning to read the horses body language accurately is especially important when working with young horses. There are so many little signs that can easily be missed before a horse shows a major reaction.
I like to talk about red and green lights, red light signs tell me to slow down or to stick with this exercise a little longer, green lights tell me that I can go to the next step.
The horse on the picture came to me about 2 years ago, because he was bolting really dangerously when riding. His rider often lost control, to a point that they both fell in a turn (kind of were to fast for the turn....) no judgment here please, stuff like that happens.
When ignoring or not noticing red light sings from the horse, its a bit like putting one stone after the other in a paper bag. Suddenly, there is that one last stone, and the bag crashes.
That one last incident, and the horse explodes, bolts, buck, spooks, turns 180 and runs home. Out of the blue - in our point of view.
Actually, the horse was already telling us with many little signs that he doesn't feel alright.
Learning to read the subtle signs is so very important to avoid accidents and drama, but also to progress at a faster speed - yes, you heard me right: actually you will win a lot of time by adapting to your horses rhythm.
I though it might be interesting for you if I would share a little series about learning to read the little signs - green lights red lights.
At this point I couldn't feel my fingers and two seconds later my phone almost slipped into the blue... Nice evening though!
My beautiful Veludo. I can’t wait to see the changes in this horse over the next year 🦄
Aww I might after seeing this cuteness 😍😍
So I took @kirosway
advice and decided to go along with Livinos burning wish to practice PantherWalk! He was so frustrated watching the others do it, yet his akward pawing usually striking me somewhere on the leg weren't getting him any recognition! 😒He was so annoyed with this unfair deal I finally went-ok-can't get worse than this can it? 😂 And behold! A happy expression, trying so hard to figure this out, but he knows I got his back and will encourage along the way 💞 also importantly we started doing the "simply standing" excersise with this little overachiever and it helped so much with his frustration! Jeij! I'm very pleased with our progress! 😁🤓 Also notice how he reads my mind and goes for carrot stretch before I put the noodle over his back? Is he telephatic or am I very predictable? 😅 Also Is there any guidelines not to overdo this with young ones? He is only soon to be 2yo! For now we practice only when he shows interest in the noodle which is cue for me to start PantherWalking 😁 #andalusian #pre #clickertraining #horsemanship #horsetraining #clickertraining #positivereinforcement #equestrian #equine #horse #andalusianhorse #spanishhorse #intrizenstudents #intrinsic #pantherwalk #younghorse
Having a play with Bella at liberty - fitness training for some 😅 wish I had four long legs sometimes!
Yesterday we had a lunging session, but Marts almost didn’t have any motivation to move, and I wasn’t very creative, so our session ended pretty quickly. Afterwards we practiced crunches, and he tried to do a school halt when I asked for panther walk. We also practiced a lot of backing up, because it’s important if we sometime in the future get “stuck” or the only safe way to go somewhere is backwards. He did really good, and after some time he could do two steps without my voice signal or my guidance from his side. Swipe to see a video. We didn’t practice this further that day, because he had already done so good.
Summa having her follow up appointment with @nele_svensson
today! After the big trip down I felt as though summa wasn’t feeling 100% and my biggest priorities are making sure my horses are feeling their best. So Nele came out and assessed where needed attention through Summa’s body. Over the years I’ve had physio’s to Summa sometimes wondering if a few issues at the time stemmed beyond the muscle. I was amazed after the first session with Nele at the difference in Summa, discovering a few mis-alignments in her. At her follow up today I was happy to hear there was a lot of improvement throughout! If you are in the Canterbury region looking for an equine therapist, I highly recommend Nele. 🐴🌻#bootlegequine #horse #equine #rquinetherapist #horsebreaking #horsetraining #horselessons #horseschooling #horsehealth
It was finally warm enough to melt some of the ice between Stitch’s paddock and the indoor today which means I was finally able to put a ride on him. It’s been a hot minute since I last swung a leg over him, and all things considered he did well.
I started with twenty minutes of ground work to help focus his mind me help him warm up mentally and physically before I hopped on. Both of my horses have been getting turned out in the indoor when they can get there or hand walked for thirty minutes. So he isn’t super out of shape, but better safe than sorry.
Before winter really hit he was riding super well. He was starting to follow my body when I’d ask him to circle right or left, he was getting much more relaxed under saddle, and getting really light into his stops. Today he did regress. When I hopped on he immediately got tense and nervous. Pretty similar to my first ride on him. I spent a bunch of time petting him and telling him what a champion he is. I spent close to ten minutes flexing him and letting him relax before walking off. We walked circled and serpentines. He eventually did relax and that’s where I stepped down. With horses I firmly believe less is more. I’m not frustrated with the regression in him, it’s just part of the process.

Every time I leave this man, it’s a small process of prepping food, supplements and making sure he knows I’m coming back...
And reminding myself not to feel guilty 🤦🏼♀️ We have amazing friends and support in @saddleandsage
... beyond grateful for Malik and Tamara. Makes moments like these less weary on both of us.
I’m in LA and SD for a few days with family and friends. We’ve been a bit silent on Instagram while getting a more normal life established in Arizona... but then again what’s normal? 🤷🏼♀️
Karla has been getting new horses for SSRS and they have integrated nicely! So fun to see them all run together! #silverspursridingschool

Virtue of the Week: .
Detachment. Detachment is experiencing your feelings without allowing your feelings to control you. .
Instead of just reacting... with detachment, you are free to choose how you will act. .
You use thinking and feeling together, so you can make smart choices.
In every situation that looks like shit… I hunt for the lesson that I need to be learning, the class that the universe is handing over to me, and the virtues that I need to be hunting for from the situation… .
Up until last week I had no idea detachment was a virtue… What a beautiful beautiful skill is to learn to be able to be detached... and really look at situations from an outside perspective…
Not the easiest virtue that I have learned yet… But goodness I’m glad that that lesson is over and I’ve graduated!🖤👊🏽💫
I mean... it’s almost like laying on the beach...🌴☀️💤... one of the best morning meditation partners I’ve had yet!💙
