Holiday weekends used to make me feel crazy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I didn't know why I couldn't handle going to a barbecue at a friend's house without eating my weight in pasta salad or successfully avoid the brownies at the event, only to eat the half of the tray left over when I came home. I was eating healthy during the week- didn't I deserve an indulgence on the weekend, without losing my mind around food? Of course I did. But the problem wasn't whether or not I deserved to enjoy fun foods. It was that I was putting CONDITIONS on my indulgences. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I could only eat the burger, or the pasta salad, or the brownie, if I had 'done good' during the week. And I could ONLY eat these 'forbidden' foods ON the long weekend. So it drove me into a full-out binge so I could 'get my fill' of foods that I considered 'bad' before the clock struck midnight on Monday. Once Tuesday hit, it was back to clean eating, no ifs ands or buts- sometimes even a cleanse to 'get rid of the bloat', when the only reason I was bloated was because I had overdone it. And then it happened over. and over. and over. EVERY weekend, all summer long-- and I couldn't figure it out. What changed? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I stopped putting conditions around WHEN I was allowed to say yes to foods that might be out of the ordinary of what I would eat on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. I ate the brownie. And when I ate the brownie when I WANTED the brownie, not when I felt like I SHOULD eat then brownie, I only ate one. And I didn't eat half a tray every weekend, any more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I started showing up to parties calm and able to choose what REALLY satisfies me, and enjoy my food, knowing I can always eat pasta salad- even if it's not Memorial Day weekend. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The quickest way to a binge? Deny yourself the permission to actually enjoy food. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I sent a whole email out to my tribe today, with my best tips for beating the binge before it happens, this holiday weekend. It’s okay to eat some “unhealthy” foods once in awhile. In my opinion, that is much healthier than restricting yourself from lots of amazing foods that most people think they can’t have because they will get fat.

As long as you are within your caloric intake specific to your goals, you can eat whatever you want. Now, that doesn’t mean just eat a bunch of pizza, ice cream, and candy, but fit them in here and there. Overall health is still important, too. Keep it about 80% “healthy” and 20% “unhealthy”.

Fat loss for Dads. If you practice some pretty simple diet and lifestyle habits just ‘being a dad ‘ can do the fat loss for you. Don’t underestimate the caloric expenditure of carrying your child, pushing the pram, and being awake longer! Instead of focusing on burning body fat, focus on eating and training in a way that makes you feel energised, and better in general. Trying to do restrictive dieting and bashing yourself 3 to 4 hours a week in the gym, will only end up with you feeling burnt out and experiencing frequent cravings for crap food. This makes achieving your ideal body an uphill battle. Plus you’ll feel like shit. Remember exercise is still a stress, a good one, but us dads already experienced quite a lot of stress, both psychological and physiologically. Training less in terms of duration, but more frequently, always seems to work better for dads, who are struggling with time and energy. If you’ve got any questions, please ask.
