Today's prompt for @joannehawker
's brilliant #marchmeetthemaker
challenge is all about customers and feedback - and as a business owner, hearing praise about my work is always such a lovely thing.
Whether it's reviews on Etsy about handmade products that people have bought from me - and using words like "beautiful", "delightful", "love it", or "highly recommended", or feedback from coaching and mentoring clients - I've shared a few testimonials on the Work With Me page on my website (link in bio) - like "you helped me think about...", "you inspired me to..." or "I didn't realise I could...", or personal emails, DMs or comments on social media, or meeting people face to face, I'm always so incredibly grateful to receive these compliments, because it helps give me confidence that what I'm doing and offering is worth something and is appreciated.
It can be really easy to focus on all the days when I don't have any new sales or new clients and wonder if it's all a bit hopeless, if I'm actually making a difference, if I should bother to keep trying. So remembering the kind words of support and encouragement I have received definitely helps.
Sometimes it can just be the very simplest words, but if heart-fully meant they can make a world of difference: Thank you.
So thank you to you, to all of you who share this space with me. I see you. I hear you. You inspire me. What you're doing is amazing. Don't give up. You are enough.

Day 17 #marchmeetthemaker
Customers and Feedback
Alice and I constantly review the needs of our students and adapt our sewing and creative course program to suit this. Our new short skills workshops being one example. As a teacher, reviewing each session and where I can improve is crucial; student feedback is always welcome. All classes have feedback forms and we have had some lovely responses over the years.
In terms of making, it is more led by own desires and excitement and if people love this and want to buy something I've made then that's fabulous.
Then there are the book reviews; so many have been great and then you get an occasional one that is not so good. I am realistic, I know tastes and expectations differ. When you have worked so hard on something though, a harsh review can hurt. But one can't be everything to all people. Focusing on the many that have enjoyed is what I like to do but also listening to and reviewing constructive criticism. This picture is a page my friend photographed from her pupil's school book a few years ago. It's very sweet and a lovely little review of our third book Sewing for Kids xx *

Day 16 #marchmeetthemaker
Not really a helper more like my right arm!
I have collaborated with Alice (2nd pic) @al_butcher_designs
since 2001, that's 17 years! Quite an achievement don't you think!
Running a small creative business can be very isolating alone, at least it was in the old days when I worked as a freelance costume maker. IG and social media has definitely helped us all in this respect.
Working with Alice always means that I don't need to take everything on myself. She takes care of all the bookings and finance side whilst I maintain our website and write the newsletters. (Wrote the latest yesterday, DM me your email if you'd like to receive one, shameless plug 😉 and most unlike me!). We both share all the other areas. She is also super supportive of my own work with sweetmyrtle as are all of you who comment and give me much encouraged.
So you too are helpers.
I am so pleased to have found IG and such a supportive community. Aren't we all lucky!

Day 15 #marchmeetthemaker
Today I've been writing our #aliceandginny
newsletter and cropping photos. This is me trying to type whilst balancing the cat on my lap. It's a bit of a juggle but he's everso sweet and loving.
has teamed up with @lucyandyak
for today's prompt with a giveaway. I'd not heard of Lucy and Yak before but am impressed by their clothing (gorgeous dungarees and trousers), their ethos and the ethical statement on their website. Through working hard to find the right family business in northern India they found tailor Ismail who pays his tailors four times the norm. They have recently open a factory and are working towards getting fairtrade status. They also send items in recycled materials bags and by November this year aim to ensure all their packaging is either biodegradable, recycled or can be reused. A small company showing this is possible in the fashion industry. Very impressed.
Go check them out.

What is your why? Personally, my work - in the many, many forms it takes - is about storytelling and connection. Whether I'm sharing my own stories, sharing the stories of others through a website, script, song, poem, story, etc., I'm always looking to unearth and guide that thread that connects us all. Over time I've really come to realize how my love for web design and development, while seemingly different from my loves for acting, singing, dancing, and writing, is simply another way to connect people. A website really helps people share stories and things that really matter to people on both sides of the screen.
What's your why? Has it become more clear to you over time or are you wondering if your why is perhaps not what you thought it was? Share with us in the comments below!

Happy Monday! It's a short week for my business, as I am finally taking a long-overdue and much-needed vacation to sunny Florida for a few days! With the snowfall that we just had here in southern Indiana last night, seemingly out of nowhere, this trip could not come at a better time!⠀
I'm finishing up some client work, making sure that my own social media/blog/email content is scheduled out and packing my bags! If you need me, I'll be back to "regularly-scheduled hours" next Tuesday, the 20th. ⠀
Are you due for a vacation? Are you going anywhere anytime soon? I feel like a college student looking forward to spring break! Leave a comment and let me know what your favorite getaways are!
Dreaming of a few weeks from now when we’ll be in this sunny spot at @gusandrubyletterpress
with no snow in sight! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Day 11 ~ #marchmeetthemaker
Not so good at this bit, have been very much a DIY over the years and never had any professional help. These kinds of challenges always help me look at aspects of what I do and help me to step back a little to identify what it is I am actually doing!! We don't have a specific logo for Alice and Ginny (though the following can be reduced in size for labelling) but do have an Alice and Ginny website header which we also use on correspondence and booking forms. It uses two of our favourite vintage fabrics but i don't remember what the font is. It's warm and friendly and a bit homely. This is what our classes are like so i suppose it reflects this well. The rough floorboards on the page (template) also fit well and give that approachable homely feel. A swanky very professional looking site probably wouldn't suit this collaboration. Regarding Sweetmyrtle and my own work I just roll along. The header from my website (2nd pic) was created from some old artwork and a self portrait. It may be due an update sometime but for now it'll stay. 😉

A little late night #fridayintroductions
for you! I’m Kelly and love all things design related. I especially love helping fellow creatives with their own brands, designing new spaces in my home, and blogging when inspiration hits. Here’s some other random facts about me: ▪️This spot in my bedroom has been my work area for the past 6 months. My computer is on a laundry basket haha.🤷🏻♀️
▪️I made a goal this year to blog once a month and I’m ahead of that goal! I forgot how fun it is.
▪️I really wish I was a morning person but I always gain energy at night. Any tips to switch from being a night owl?
▪️Many weekends, I’m solo parenting so I’m always looking for things to do with my boys. There’s only so long we can last in the house! #cabinfever
It’s one of those weekends so send some ideas my way!
Would love to hear some random facts about you in the comments👇🏼
We had to move our @shopcrompton

Hello! Happy Friday!
I'm dipping back into #marchmeetthemaker
with today's prompt of #howitsmade
. I know I've been teasing you with glimpses of new things, and today I've been working on a first batch of fabric notebook covers, so here's another sneaky peek.
The process of making them isn't really rocket science - cutting out the fabric, applying interfacing, stitching, turning, pressing, and more stitching, in fact the trickiest bit to start with wad getting the measurements right so the finished covers go on and off the notebooks easily (yes - they're removable so you can re-use the cover on more notebooks!) I'm loving working with these bold coloured fabrics, and figuring out how I can batch tasks together to be more efficient - so doing all the cutting out in one go for instance.
I do have a question for you though - when it comes to notebooks, do you prefer lined or plain paper? Or maybe dots or grids? Let me know so that I can make sure I'm offering what you want!
Have a fab rest of your Friday friends!

Day 7 ~ #marchmeetthemaker
I have been self employed for over 25 years but still find it hard to have a disciplined routine. I am very much an in the flow type person and resist structure but know that some structure is good for me. My teaching of which I take four regular and up to six sessions per week provides some structure. Monday to Wednesday is mainly focused on prep, teaching and all things Alice and Ginny always starting each day with a cuppa and a good breakfast. On these days I also try and catch up with paperwork; newsletters, website updates, brochure pics and text. Thursday's is my clear day for creativity at home but I'm invariably tired and have a lie in as after two nights teaching I'm usually trashed! Friday's is monthly drop in sewing cafe and if I'm teaching on Saturdays i use Fridays for final prep. Sundays and any time snatched in the week becomes gardening and allotment days. I also take on one off community projects from time to time but usually in the warmer months when my energy levels are better. Last year I made a conscious decision to not take on any additional projects to focus on some health issues but also to give myself time to play. I enrolled on a three Module natural dye training with @thewilddyery
which has been fantastic. I still have a little of the final module to do and then it's working out how to incorporate these new skills my work going forward.
