Regardless of how ya feel about him nowadays, #MJ
's passing #10YearsAgo
was definitely a #WhereWereYou
Just remembering that day and brief aftermath.
I was just leaving my job orientation, when we stopped by a 7-11 to simply get a slurpee, in #Burbank
when right when I was about to get out of the car, it was announced on the radio. My family was all shocked and kept listening to coverage for several more minutes. When I got into the 7-11, it was a unreal scene, it was packed of folks talking and speculating upon it, the store clerk turned on the #TV
and practically everyone was just watching. I was very much glued to the radio the whole time going home, awaiting of any updates.
When I got home I was just glued to the TV for the rest of the day to the late night (I don't even remember turning off the TV, and just falling asleep and waking up to continuous coverage), as almost every major channel was talking about #MichaelJackson
. It was 24/7 coverage for a seemingly long time. The images of the large crowds at #RonaldRegan
hospital at #UCLA
was fascinating (especially considering how I was still wanting and dreaming of becoming one of the #UCLABruins
. I'm glad how that turned out Haha). I searched for the #records
I had (such as this #25thAnniversary
Thriller Album) and listened to em for a while. I decided to check out a few #recordstores
the next few days (#fye
, & a couple more), all of which were packed trying to find any MJ item & album, folks just hanging around talking about him, and it remained that way for the next few times I'd revisit em in the coming wks (bought some things as well). It felt very communal.
The coverage, tributes, & talk of it was pretty insane for the next several weeks (reminiscent of Princess Diana's passing & the OJ chase -- which I have memories of as well), pretty unprecedented, as it occurred right before social media really blew up the few years after and saturated how news/info spread. The impact he had upon music & the world was enormous, and that day 10 years ago was a sign of that.
