For the 8th day of #georgianjanuary , jewel tones: John Hancock’s red velvet coat and embroidered blue silk waistcoat (1780s, Old State House, Boston). Both suitably elaborate garments for one of the richest men in Massachusetts. #hancock #bostoniansociety #oldstatehouse #fashionhistory #velvet #silk #foundingfathers #crimson #jeweltones

Thomas and Katherine Clarke were in the Royal Painter and paperhanger Guild starting in the 1680s. When they moved to Boston they incorporated their sign into their building. The sign stayed there till the 1820s. It is now at the Bostonian Society. #oldsigns #bostoniansociety #royalarms #wallpaper #carvedsigns #mynewengland
Dressing for work (or looking for a mind at work)! Yes, I've been listening to Hamilton. 1. shift & stays 2. fichu and pocket, hair up 3. petticoat, stomacher, gown and cap 4. powder (Besame violet brightening powder), rouge (from a historically accurate makeup company on etsy), and lip color (Ilia Arabian Knights) #bostoniansociety #oldstatehouse #revolutionarywar #historicalclothing #historicalinterpretation #corset #historygeek #historygram #revolutionarycharacters #bostonhistory #myjob #reenactor #historicaldress

Here are some of the lovely, clever historical interpreters at The Bostonian Society wearing the new cotton chintz gowns I made for them! The fabrics are from Colonial Williamsburg and the gown pattern is by the incomparable Larkin and Smith. My first gown comission outside of the BTPSM taught me a lot (particularly about time management - I have so many awesome jobs to juggle), but I'm very pleased with how everything came together. Did you miss the City of Boston's Independence Day exercises? Check out pictures of the Mayor kicking off the parade, the Declaration of Independence reading at the Old State House, and @dianeguerrero_ 's powerful remarks at the annual 4th of July oration at Faneuil Hall. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŒΉπŸ“œ #4thofJuly #IndependenceDay #Boston #BostonMA #VisitBoston #BostonianSociety #DeclarationofIndependence #DianeGuerrero

On my way to drop off the first 18th century gown I've made as an independent comissioned seamstress. Made in 11 days while also working a full-time job, including 2 Tavern Night performances and my high school reunion. The deadline nearly killed me, but Elizabeth Cummings is going to look fabulous in her new gown at the Old State House this summer! #finalproduct #finishedproject #tightdeadline #seamstress #handsewn #chintz #gown #reproductionfabric #18thcentury #18thcenturyfashion #historicalcostume #larkinandsmith #oldstatehouse #bostoniansociety #bostonhistory #colonialboston
On July 18th, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was read to the People of Boston from this balcony. Then every year since 1780, on the 4th, it had been read to celebrate and remember. Now performed with a bit more pomp and circumstance, (including confetti cannons most years) it is a must see event. I attend every year, always leaving proud and patriotic. And, pleased I didn't miss one detail of the facade of this building. Loved seeing this historical play performed in the ACTUAL room where it happened. So cool. (With reproduction furniture by Eli Cleveland and the North Bennett Street School.) And then I got a glorious cannoli and walked around the North End while catching up with Courtney O'Connor, who directed the play. We utterly failed to remember we should take a selfie. 😊 #friends #emerson #historicaltheater #theroomwhereithappens #bloodonthesnow #bostoniansociety

On March 31, 1776, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John: "I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors." Adams's letters give great insight into both a woman's perspective on American politics and key events in Boston including the Battle of Bunker Hill, the evacuation of #Boston , the reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Old State House on July 18, 1776. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ“πŸšΊ

Standing amongst tall skyscrapers today in the center of Boston, the Old State House beckons tourists to come and walk the Freedom Trail. Housing artifacts and history such as the red velvet suit John Hancock wore as he was sworn in as governor, a vial of tea from the original Tea Party, and a lantern that was hung to signal meeting of the Sons of Liberty...all that enter the museum are transported back to the days in which our country began its fight for freedom. #oldstatehouse #freedomtrail #freedomtrailboston #bostoniansociety #revoltionarywar #boston #bostonma #americanhistory #freedomfighters #sonsofliberty #declarationofi dependencefirstreadfromthebalcony #emptynestadventures #romesflashback #flashbackphotodotnet
When in Boston...wear the #tricorn and be a #revolutionary πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ The #tricorne or tricorn is a style of #hat that was popular during the 18th century, falling out of style by 1800, though actually not called a "tricorne" until the mid 1800s. At the peak of its popularity, the tricorne varied greatly in style and size, and was worn not only by the aristocracy, but also as common civilian dress, and as part of military and naval uniforms πŸ“#instagood #fashion #friends #beardo #instamood #amazing #instagram #style #iphoneonly #webstagram #funny #iphonesia #igdaily #boston #streetphotography #lifestyle #architecture #bostoniansociety #revolution #oldstatehouse @thefreedomtrail
Today, 247 years ago, the Boston Massacre occurred outside of the Old State House. In the Freedom Trail Pop Up Book of Boston, you will see Henry Pelham's recreated illustration of that important day pop off the page. Get your copy of the #BostonPopUpBook at the link in my bio. . . Produced just three weeks after the Boston Massacre, Paul Revere’s historic engraving, β€œThe Bloody Massacre in King-Street,” was probably the most effective piece of war propaganda in American history. Many say it is not an accurate depiction of the actual event. Revere based his engraving on the work of artist Henry Pelham, who created the first illustration of the episodeβ€”and who was neither paid nor credited for his work. #bostonpopup #freedomtrail #oldstatehouse #bostoniansociety #popupbook #travelboston #Boston #visitboston #bostoniansociety #bostonian #freedomtrailboston #bostonusa #bostondotcom #bostonpopsup #thepopupbook #popup #bostonhistory #paperengineer #iloveboston #tourist #travelboston #travel #nationalparks #bostonnps #BeBoston
