On this day, exactly ONE year ago, I moved from Texas to New York City on a whim.
I got the job offer of my dreams from ELLE Magazine on the Wednesday of October 4, 2017. Three days later, on Saturday, I found an apartment with a complete stranger that looked “suitable.” On Sunday, I moved across the country with just three suitcases and a dream in tow. By Monday, I was sitting at my Hearst cubicle asking myself what I’d done.
This past year I: published five print articles, sampled New Zealand fare, taught myself Photoshop, snapped a picture with @miss_jalexander
, pierced an ear in an underground basement during a rock concert/beauty event, watched @gigihadid
twirl at #NYFW
, reconnected with acquaintances from my university (who are now my best friends), haunted concerts in Prospect Park, burned through my reading list, expanded into digital writing when I had no idea what I was doing (still don’t?), met @ageofaquaria
, caught ten Broadway musicals, cut 14 inches off my hair, viewed American Gothic in person, danced alongside @beyonce
at her OTRII concert, purchased a ~real~ cold weather coat (I thought I knew what winter was until I moved here #bombcyclone
), ice skated at Bryant Park to the tunes of Frank Sinatra on a perfect day, launched confetti cannon attacks on Canal during Chinese New Year, ran the NYC 5K with my roommate who turned out NOT to be a kidnapper, watched the NYE ball drop in #timessquare
with my people (NEVER AGAIN), embarrassed friends in the audience of my first two live television tapings, witnessed @itsshangela
get snubbed on RuPaul’s All Stars with strangers at Mr. Big’s, fell in love (with @thehalalguys
street food), established my special spot in #centralpark
, managed and grew an instagram from 98K to 112K followers, and formed friendships I can’t imagine living without.
Special thanks to all of you who supported this biology grad (with no formal media/writing training to her name) in her dreams of moving to the east coast to write. I love you.
