, the well deserved rookie of the year, is going to be a greater basketball player than Mitchell in terms of accomplishments, value & success in a wider range of categories of the game.
Both will be all stars in the next 1-2 yrs, without a doubt, but only Simmons’ name will be mentioned alongside Magic, MJ, LeBron, Kobe, and maybe Durant
is a lethal scoring weapon. He creates opportunities to score and has the ability to generate offense whenever he feels; He can make tough shots when his teammates aren’t scoring, throughout a game and late in the fourth. He is a threat off the dribble as a driver and shooter. He can also work off ball, evident by his success this season spot up shooting and shooting on catch-and-release jumpers. But he isn't as advanced as a facilitator.
Take the area where each player contributes the most value... for Simmons it’s assists and for Mitchell it’s points. Simmons was top 5 in the NBA this season in APG whereas Mitchell wasn’t even in the top 20 (he was 21) in PPG.
Mitchell’s value is more dependent on whether or not he can become a better scorer to take his PPG to a 25-point range to match lower-assist guards like Devin Booker and Oladipo while Simmons' value is driven by his versatility. Simmons is so rare and unique; a 6’10” point forward with great handles, court vision and a high basketball IQ that cannot be taught. He also makes the game easier for his teammates.
On defense Simmons is more valuable too. While Mitchell is a great defender who applies pressure, it doesnt compare to Simmons ability to match up w basically anybody; guards, wings, and bigs.
While DM has that Mamba mentality who will continue to go on unstoppable scoring outbursts, on an off night, Simmons would make an impact as a passer, rebounder and defender, whereas Mitchell’s contributions would be more limited.
While Simmons will have to work on his jumpshot to be labeled a scorer and match Mitchell there, he still averaged 15.8 PPG without a jumper.
DM will probably be that 25 PPG scorer leading a playoff team, But he wont be able to match Simmons' broader range of skills n ability to add value in every aspect of the game
