Today i tried @service.angel.percie
's engagement training (go watch her latest YouTube video) for the second time. Two days ago we had a first attempt which didn't go so well (see the "training" highlight) and left me feeling frustrated and a bit discouraged. But after watching Claire's video again and analyzing my footage, i saw a few things that i could've done better so i thought it would be a good idea to retry the exercise.
This time, i lowered my expectations, made the steps clearer for myself and slowed the training down. Instead of quickly going through the first step and moving onto the next one immediately, i took my time and only did a few minutes of the second part. I kept the session nice and short which made it possible to end on a very positive note. At the end, i was smiling and really proud of Max and myself.
Even though i still don't think it went great, i believe with practice and repetition i can learn to teach engagement to Max (to a certain extent) and continue to build our relationship.
I'd love to learn more about dog training and behavior, are there any books you would recommend? And, how could I improve these training sessions in the future? Any support and input is very much appreciated!
(btw, i feel like I'm in an 2000's hip hop music video with these baggy pants, jenny from the block who?)
First video: the first minute of our training session. I start by the first step, so i lure Max towards me with treats while slowly moving around the room.
Second video: the fifth and last minute of the first step. Still luring, but the treat is given after more effort, i move more around the room and also make Max sit, lay down and crawl.
Third video: the first minute of the second step. Max quickly understands that he has to look at me to get rewarded, I mark with "yes" and give a treat. When i move to the other side of the room, Max follows me.
Fourth video: the fourth minute of the second step and last of the training session. Max still follows me around but also watches me closely. For a moment, he starts panting, this is when i decide that i am tired too. Max looks at me very disappointed when i finish the session and release him.
