"Today I wear #pink
. With a smile on my face and a hop in my step."
Hi my name is Conrad Richard and I was bullied throughout K-12. When I was a kid i had been bullied for being over weight, for playing with dolls, for being sensitive. I was expected to "fit in" in a certain way. I didn't. I wore dresses, I wanted to dance, I watched romance movies, i cried, I baked. This lead to more bullying. Kids can be so cruel.
By the age of 12, I started to deal with my sexual awakening. OMG I like boys. And that scared the absolute shit out of me. Why? People talk. The things I heard about the other queer kids in the school were not favourable. I felt as if I was gonna be next.
At 14 my family found out. At 14 my school found out. At 14 I started to harm myself. At 14 the bullying went from snide comments to getting called faggot in the halls. I was mocked for having a lisp. I had very little allies. I felt as if most of the teachers and administration wouldn't care. Because honestly they didn't.
I was bullied until I was 17. I was bullied until I snapped. I was brought down to the office for fighting back and calling out my bullies. I refused to apologize for my existence and I wanted respect.
Today I wear #pink
. With a smile on my face and a hop in my step. .
International Day of Pink is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, and all forms of bullying.
The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when 2 straight high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The 2 students intervened, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic & transphobic bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity. The result was that an entire school took a stand and began working together to prevent homophobic & transphobic bullying.
