I wasn't sure what to post about today so I decided to talk about my experience at #DefCon
in 2014. It was amazing, but a tad overwhelming too.
I was younger and single at the time. I'd never been to Las Vegas before. I didn't want to go alone but none of my actual friends had any interest in #hacking
. I posted on FB asking if any of my FB friends would go with me. A guy who I had IT classes with in the past said he would. Looking back, I know that was a mistake. We didn't get along so well on the trip and we never spoke again afterwards. In hindsight, since none of my friends wanted to go and I didnt wanna go alone, I probably should have taken my mom.
I also knew virtually nothing about hacking except that I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I worked in IT so I figured I'd be able to at least pick up some things. That was sort of true but there were so many talks that were so completely over my head.
Most of people I met there were really friendly. Someone did steal my bag though 😠 but I suppose that's what I get for leaving it lying around. I met a lot of really interesting folks. Some of them were crazy, but it's #Vegas
so what do you expect?
The badges they give you are awesome (you can see mine in the photo) and hackable!!! I still have mine and I don't think I will ever part with it.
The line to get the badges is a nightmare! Me and my travel partner had waited in the line for over an hour and we weren't even close to the front. We still had at least another 1.5 hours to go. Luckily a guy from #reddit
recognized my tattoos and approached us. He let us give him the money for the badges and skip the line. (He was a speaker so they he had extras). If you go, don't skip the social engineering village or the #lockpicking
challenges! And don't get your name on the #wallofsheep
In 2019 I am going back to Vegas but this time for #BlackHat
. I am curious to see the difference between the two. I know BlackHat is more corporate. I do plan to make it back to DefCon some day though. Maybe 2020?
Have you been? If so, what were your thoughts?
