TEACHING THE HIP HINGE! Whether it’s lining up to hit a golf ball, playing other sports, or just daily activity, the hinge movement can’t be overlooked! Using something as simple as a stick or golf club to maintain 3 points of contact through the back of the head, upper back, and hip region is a good way to determine if an athlete understands this position. If they struggle, we’re going to go over and show you some regressions of this movement that we use to teach our athletes how to master the hinge!
Homestead Hearth! Yesterday’s @deadcemberofficial session called for glute ham raises, so we had to get a little creative to try and recreate the movement @nextlevelrochester. So we loaded up a barbell with 25lb plates (45lbs would elevate the barbell too much and we couldn’t secure our feet at the right height to perform the movement) at the bottom of a portable squat rack, secured our feet under the bar, and made it work! To piggy back on the post this afternoon discussing what Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is and how to utilize it, again fellow PT Caleb does a nice job of laying it out and how you should interpret what the numbers mean! #Repost @dr.caleb.burgess with @get_repost ・・・ 💥Resistance Training RPE💥 - 💥 Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) is a way to subjectively measure how hard you feel you're working during a set, exercise, etc. It's a great way to monitor INTERNAL LOAD (how the weight feels) rather than EXTERNAL LOAD (how much the weight actually is) - 🏋🏻 EXTERNAL LOAD doesn't change, but INTERNAL LOAD can vary widely based on multiple factors: 🔹 Fatigue from previous training 🔹 Poor sleep 🔹 Excessive stress 🔹 Change in training time 🔹 If you had caffeine before your workout 🔹 etc, etc - 💥 One huge limiting factor of using %RM when designing a resistance training program is that it only takes into account EXTERNAL LOAD without taking into account INTERNAL LOAD. Since RPE takes internal load into account, you can program the intensity more effectively - 💯 This would keep you from lifting TOO MUCH if you're feeling drained or lifting TOO LITTLE if you're feeling great that day - 🏆 For example: 🔹 Instead of lifting 90% 1RM on a "Heavy" day, try 9/10 RPE 🔹 Instead of lifting 70% 1RM on a "Light" day, try 7/10 RPE - 🚨 Disclaimer: I'm not saying that you should stop using %RM, as it will give you a good reference for EXTERNAL LOAD intensity variation. However, RPE helps to monitor INTERNAL LOAD as well, which helps to more completely monitor INTENSITY variation with resistance training 👌🏼 - ❤️ TAG or SHARE with a coach or training partner! - 📚 Concept taken from: Zourdos MC et al, "Novel Resistance Training-Specific RPE Scale Measuring Repetitions in Reserve." So what do we do when it comes to returning an athlete back from injury who has no pain, but are still struggling with some things?? We strength train! Here’s a guest post we did with our guy @tdathletesedge a while back discussing the use of RPE (rate of perceived exertion) during strength training to allow us to consider the athletes perception of difficulty and other factors than just relying solely on weight they’re lifting. ‼️ADDRESSING S POSTURE DURING GOLF SETUP‼️Golf athletes who present with an overextended low back upon addressing the ball could potentially be increasing stress on the low back as they continue to swing and rotate around the low back in that position. The low hanging fruit is to figure out if they can maintain a more of a neutral or flexed posture to bring them back more into a position that is more advantageous for their low back. In addition to compound lifts such as heavier goblet squats, which challenges the anterior core, we like to do exercises that really hone in on trying to resist that overly extended position to make it less of a chore to get out of that position. Again body awareness is key for the golf athlete to improve good coordinated efforts to maximize their potential. Here’s just a few things we try. _____________________________________________ Dead bug without and with ball - the keys are to try and maintain your low back in contact with the ground as your arms and legs move around a stable midsection. You can progress to using a ball to maintain tension through the midsection. _____________________________________________ Band assisted reverse crunch - reverse crunches are a great way to help reverse that overextended low back and again target the anterior core in a position that it’s not accustom too. Putting tension through the band also helps keep stress on the front aspect of the “core” _____________________________________________ TRX fallouts - another great way to challenge the spine to maintain its position as the arms extend out and away from the body. Keep stomach braced and squeeze glutes to prevent low back from excessively arching. _____________________________________________ Tag someone who could benefit from these exercises or leave us a comment!
‼️GOLF ASSESSMENT PART 2‼️putting your body in the best position to perform optimally is important, especially at the start of your golf swing. Any faulty mechanics depending on position of the low back can create more accumulation of stress which could potentially show up as you continue to swing or play. Find what neutral is for you and work on owning that position to improve efficiency before you even swing! Stay tuned as we go over some corrections we can make if golf athletes present with either an S or C Posture and struggle to get out of that position! Tag a friend who could benefit from this assessment!
‼️BASIC GOLF ASSESSMENTS‼️The pelvic tilt test is a really easy test to perform on athletes to determine what testing position they default to. S posture and C posture types are positions that can be associated with some mechanical issues in a golf swing and should be assessed and identified to figure out how best to address it.
