Unsane is directed by Steven Soderburgh and stars Claire Foy as a woman who is suffering from past traumatic events and checks herself into a mental ward, only to discover that they have no intention of letting her leave. This film had a really cool premise and I thought the experimental style of shooting everything on an iPhone had potential, but ultimately it didn't deliver for me on either. It looked sloppy and unappealing to watch and I liked the set up, but they went absolutely nowhere with it, at least nowhere interesting. -
They do go places in the script that is both horrific and unsettling to watch, but it all just felt too convenient and too on the nose. I felt there were much more interesting twists and turns the plot could have taken, and they did start to go down that path a few times, but abandoned it right away for something far less compelling. Which for me, was very frustrating. And I know this isn't my movie and they're entitled to tell the story they want to tell, but that doesn't mean I have to like it either. It was dull for the majority of the time, the pacing was all over the place, and the characters were poorly written and performed. Claire Foy is the only one that felt like she was trying here and was actually pretty good in her performance, but she's a great actress. The bad guy was bland and at times comical to watch work, because he was so horrible. It honestly felt like they grabbed all these people off the street with no experience in acting, with the exception of Matt Damon, who makes an odd random cameo?
I know it seems like I'm crapping all over this movie, but it's only because my expectations were high and it dissapointing almost everyone of them. There are things I enjoyed. Foy's performance, the horror tones and vibes were really strong throughout, the first 30 minutes of set up were really strong, and I actually really liked the ending scene. However, that doesn't change the fact that the film had an interesting premise that fell flat halfway through, with poor characters, and shot like it came from a highschool film enthusiast. If your interested watch it, if not, don't go out of your way.
