I’m very excited to launch a new section of my blog dedicated to storytelling about the recovery and beautiful stories of those affected by mental health struggles. . Some psychologists argue that overcoming adversity can lead to growth. Jay (2017) describes the phenomenon of resilient people as “supernormal.” Feldman calls those that overcome adversity and choose to give back as “supersurvivors.” Southwick and Charney (2017) describe potential “benefits” of adversity: 1. Greater compassion for others 2. Enhanced wisdom and maturity 3. A new sense of meaning and purpose 4. Greater sense of kinship with humanity Are you a “super survivor?” If you are, you possess some major strength and perseverance. I can’t think of anything cooler than meeting someone who knows herself and owns her story. Going to Therapy is definitely the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. EMDR therapy is a brain based therapeutic approach that targets memory networks and it has by far been the most effective approach for me. Have you been to therapy and what works best for you?

How is technology and social media really affecting our brains? Some new studies show that social media conversations demand a lot of the brain’s resources. In fact Baker (2019) states that “the mental juggling involved in switching back and forth between platforms and conversations slows down our brains-sometimes for up to 30 minutes after a switch of topic”(p.64)Designating certain days/times of the week for social media interaction is one way to avoid this pitfall. Heid (2019) has some interesting tips about turning goals into daily habits. The key to accomplishing your goals is setting specific, tangible action steps. For example if you want to get in shape, he suggests putting in Your calendar the days and times you will go. “Getting specific, planning ahead and setting reminders” are important action steps to help you turn your goals into habits. One other key element? Finding the fun or enjoyment in it. Maybe you dread walking on the treadmill, but perhaps you enjoy listening to a playlist while you’re doing it. V A L I D A T I O N I went for a run today and at some point I must have mistakenly ended my run on my Fitbit. I realized at about 1.5 miles into my run and I was so upset! LOL I had to remind myself that even though I didn’t have “evidence” from my Fitbit, I knew how long I was running for. And my body will silently thank me for it. And then for the rest of my run I thought about the need for third-party validation. Why do we feel the need for someone else to see what we do? Or need some physical evidence to prove that we lived through an experience? Is it really that necessary to document everything that we document in life? While I came to the conclusion that it is largely pointless to always NEED some physical evidence, I still took the time to lookup my run distance using the Health app on my phone. At the suggestion of my message therapist @ryn.massage I've gone #vegetarian for the past two weeks. Here's what I've noticed... 1) reduced overall aches, pains and inflammation 2) reduced gas and bloating 3) Reduced skin irritations and rashes 4) improved daily nutrition 5) improved immune system performance 6) reduced sinus mucus 7) improved daily elimination Coincidence? Probably not! Gonna stay on this path for a little longer to see what happens. Last year on International Silly Walk Day in Brno, Czech Republic More than 250 people dressed in costumes and performed the Silly Walk from cult comedy Monty Python last Sunday in Brno, Czech Republic, marking the 6th International Silly Walk Day. City officials dedicated the day to the people and organizations that help individuals suffering from mental illness. The march was originally named “The Silly Walk Event of the Year” and took place in Reykjavik, Iceland. Stepping into February with my head held high!
Blessed to attend the @thisismybrave short documentary screening tonight. It’s amazing the value of storytelling in the fight against stigma and in normalizing conversations about mental illness. I was moved by the stories and warriors tonight. I can say that I shared my story on camera for the first time this past weekend, and it was so difficult. I cannot imagine how hard and freeing it was for them! . Thank you, @bipolarmomlife for this amazing movement. As I embark on this two year journey towards my PhD, this Ted Talk by Angela Lee Duckworth (2013) was perfect for me to hear. She talks about her time teaching in the New York public school system and surprisingly found that IQ was not the best predictor of a students success. Surely social intelligence played a major role? No, the factor that predicts a student’s success is #grit . Makes sense since grit is defined as “passion and perseverance for very long term goals.” As Duckworth points out, “Grit is living life like it is a marathon and not a sprint.” Given that this characteristic is so important for success, how do we teach it to students? One way that has been successful was developed by Stanford University, and it has adopted the “Growth Mindset”, by teaching young learners that “learning is not fixed and that the brain changes and grows in response to challenges (Duckworth, 2013)” Cheers to a #growthmindset and good old #grit . Working out helps me survive law school by giving me a few hours a day to let go of my to-do list, my academic work, and everything else that I can’t get off my mind at any other time. Mental health is so important, and part of that is being able to turn your focus away from life’s stressors. Working out is how I do this, but I challenge everyone to find a strategy that works for you! Today I did the same arm workout I posted last week. I’m so thankful that my friends and I have healthy bodies that enable us to do activities together, like bowling. I hate when people, myself included, say things like “I wish I had a good body” because almost everyone who says that has a good body. Having a good body means having a healthy body. Having a good body is being able to get out of bed in the morning. Having a good body is being able to choose how you want to spend your day or live your life. Having a good body is being able to go bowling with friends. As insecure as these friends and I may be about our bodies, we are thankful to have good bodies.
