Some psychologists argue that overcoming adversity can lead to growth. Jay (2017) describes the phenomenon of resilient people as “supernormal.” Feldman calls those that overcome adversity and choose to give back as “supersurvivors.” Southwick and Charney (2017) describe potential “benefits” of adversity:
1. Greater compassion for others
2. Enhanced wisdom and maturity
3. A new sense of meaning and purpose
4. Greater sense of kinship with humanity
Are you a “super survivor?” If you are, you possess some major strength and perseverance. Here’s to super human strength in the face of adversity 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Valentine’s Day can be hard for all of us. Know you are important and don’t need anyone to validate you today or any day!
What old story are you ready to let go of? What new story will you invite in to your life? #dawngaden
My colleague @dr.christina_
started an action campaign to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻By creating this tote, she’s encouraging all of us to keep the conversation going about mental health and treatment. Check it out @hashtagtherapyiscool
Net proceeds for this bag support mental health organizations that provide treatment.
I can’t think of anything cooler than meeting someone who knows herself and owns her story. Going to Therapy is definitely the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. EMDR therapy is a brain based therapeutic approach that targets memory networks and it has by far been the most effective approach for me. Have you been to therapy and what works best for you?
Spread your wings and fly! Not sure how? Do you really have wings? Rest assured, you do, you just have to claim your power. #dawngaden
It’s time to live your greatest self! That means getting a little uncomfortable... and also honoring those in our lives that are already super stars! Tune in Tuesday 7am weekly on my Facebook page (Dawn Gaden).
How is technology and social media really affecting our brains? Some new studies show that social media conversations demand a lot of the brain’s resources. In fact Baker (2019) states that “the mental juggling involved in switching back and forth between platforms and conversations slows down our brains-sometimes for up to 30 minutes after a switch of topic”(p.64)Designating certain days/times of the week for social media interaction is one way to avoid this pitfall. What are some ways you structure your social media use so it doesn’t impact how your brain functions?
Heid (2019) has some interesting tips about turning goals into daily habits. The key to accomplishing your goals is setting specific, tangible action steps. For example if you want to get in shape, he suggests putting in Your calendar the days and times you will go. “Getting specific, planning ahead and setting reminders” are important action steps to help you turn your goals into habits. One other key element? Finding the fun or enjoyment in it. Maybe you dread walking on the treadmill, but perhaps you enjoy listening to a playlist while you’re doing it. Shifting your thoughts to embrace the positive is key. How do you find fun in the daily routine of life? 📸@lizmoody
Took a break from my studies to attend this special event @nordstrom
with my bestie from high school @robinjochims
Shopping, brunch and good company while meeting my favorite jewelry designer @monicavinader.
Love all of her pieces and got to add a few more to my collection!! Self-care can come in many different forms, and it turns out that changing up the routine plus spending time with good friends is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. Thank you @dressedbyhannah
for inviting us to the event! How are you attending to your self-care this week?
I don’t often share about myself on here, but I will be opening up a little bit more in the future. I recently relaunched my blog on a new platform and with a new URL to fully brand it. I hadn’t yet taken the time to unveil it or explain where the name comes from. My blog’s name is a play on words explaining my life and my battle with anxiety, but it’s a fun lifestyle blog where I sometimes share mental health information.
Take a look at the new website and read about my design, the story behind the name Spinning Through Life and the girl on the bike in my newest post!

Stepping into February with my head held high!
Blessed to attend the @thisismybrave
short documentary screening tonight. It’s amazing the value of storytelling in the fight against stigma and in normalizing conversations about mental illness. I was moved by the stories and warriors tonight. I can say that I shared my story on camera for the first time this past weekend, and it was so difficult. I cannot imagine how hard and freeing it was for them!
Thank you, @bipolarmomlife
for this amazing movement. I hope to be able to be a part of it in some small way at some point myself! #thisismybrave
As I embark on this two year journey towards my PhD, this Ted Talk by Angela Lee Duckworth (2013) was perfect for me to hear. She talks about her time teaching in the New York public school system and surprisingly found that IQ was not the best predictor of a students success. Surely social intelligence played a major role? No, the factor that predicts a student’s success is #grit
. Makes sense since grit is defined as “passion and perseverance for very long term goals.” As Duckworth points out, “Grit is living life like it is a marathon and not a sprint.” Given that this characteristic is so important for success, how do we teach it to students? One way that has been successful was developed by Stanford University, and it has adopted the “Growth Mindset”, by teaching young learners that “learning is not fixed and that the brain changes and grows in response to challenges (Duckworth, 2013)” Cheers to a #growthmindset
and good old #grit
